Following the rule of contrappasso, or rather, where one’s punishment is the opposite of their crime, when an artist’s reality begins to dissipate, they rediscover the craft of working with their hands even more so, reestablishing their alliances with artisans. The exhibition, “Doppia Firma”, was held in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana during Milan’s 2016 Salone del Mobile, was promoted by the Fondazione Cologni mestieri d’arte in collaboration with Living. It featured a series of blended-material creations ideated by designers and makers alike, using a range of marble, brass, wood, bronze, paper, and fabric. The woodworking masters of Bottega Ghianda have made a comeback, thanks to Michele de Lucchi’s artistic direction and the expert skill of Romeo Sozzi, owner of Promemoria. Gebruder Thonet Vienna, owned by Moschini SpA since 2003, continues the historic label’s craft of bending wood by hand. The ‘Gioielli alla moda’ exhibition, curated by Alba Cappellieri in Milan’s Palazzo Reale, shows how a new generation of jewellers are using tradition to revive the craft. Artisan and digital practices join together to create works of art that combine diverse materials.

The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, which, in all of its facets, captures the extraordinary even within the routine. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick-up on budding trends, emerging talents and neglected aesthetics. Instead of essays, we use brief tales to tune into the rhythm of our world. We travelled for a year without stopping, and seeing as the memory of this journey has not faded, we have chosen to edit a printed copy. We eliminated anything episodic, ephemeral or fading, maintaining a variety of articles that flow, without losing the element of surprise, the events caught taking place, and the creations having just bloomed.
