The Bosco Verticale (Vertical wood), the skyscraper designed by the studio Boeri, grown amongst doubts in the Isola area, a popular district of Milan, has earned the highest honour for a vertical construction: the International Highrise Award (prize for the most innovative skyscraper in the world), beating other prestigious competitors such as Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel and Steven Holl. The new vertical architecture in the area of Porta Nuova, much discussed by the Milanese unwilling to change their city’s skyline, is gaining international exposure.
Giorgio Napolitano expressed his congratulations by letter to studio Boeri for a project that confirms the value of Made in Italy, while Giuliano Pisapia, mayor of Milan, always averse to Boeri, preferred to emphasise how its recognition rewards the city of Milan. However, it is a source of pride that an Italian studio has won the prestigious award, becoming one of the three recognised international stars of architecture.
Sitting on the veranda of the new Bio.it restaurant in Via Confalonieri 8 one dines with the silhouette of the Vertical Wood by one’s side: the view is impressive and affords the pleasure of a contemporary glimpse of Milan.
