This year’s Milan Design Week saw an impressive 20% increase in visitors. Historical building, piazzas, courtyards, gardens, cloisters, architecture and design studios, cinema foyers (Anteo)….all hosting events and exhibitions. Long, orderly lines of visitors snaked along sidewalks, basking in the early summer sun that graced the Fuorisalone. The design circuit took over new spaces; ex-industrial construction and old villas (the Future Dome on Via Paisiello), and new neighborhoods, like Zone 5, dedicated to interactive sensitive design. The city opened its arms. The euphoria having faded, it is hard to weigh-in on things. Even the most disparate images superimpose and get lost in a whirling carousel. The lasting sense, clear and concrete, is that healthy design, daring, surprising design, is here to stay.
