The astounding installation at the MGM in Macao in the autumn of 2015 represents a sort of apotheosis of uninhibited creativity for the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. In the museum’s courtyard, using a patient feminine touch, Joana installed an enormous and colourful cloth octopus, stretching its tentacles to embrace the entire space. The element of surprise, solicited by the complexity and boldness of her work, is enhanced when one considers that the gigantic creation is the result of a team of women, passing days sewing ruffles and beads, applying fringe and trims, and knitting immense circles. The amount of Joana’s artistic irreverence is always fueled by patient and virtuous manual skills, nurtured by an extraordinary feminine expertise that enhances the sense of wonder her work inspires.
